Cleanliness is a vital safety first measure. A child needs to have a daily bath; to wash her or his hand before meals and after going to the toilet; and to have his or her hair washed once a week. The child will do these more naturally if the habit is formed early. A two-year-old can learn to was its own hands, as did Marie Dionne and her sisters at that age. It should not, however, be allowed to fill the bowl until it is four or five; that is, old enough not to burn itself with hot water.
